Overcoming the scale-problem in galaxy formation simulations using multi-fluid hydrodynamics

Galaxy formation is one of the central processes studied in extragalactic astrophysics. Although cosmological simulations of galaxy formation have advanced enormously over the past two decades, state-of-the-art models remain constrained by the dynamic range they can cover and by the quality of the small-scale closure models they employ. In cases such as stellar and active galactic nucleus feedback, these closure models can decisively shape the simulation outcome. In this talk, I will argue that accurately representing multi-phase gas is essential for robust closures. I will show how multi-fluid hydrodynamics provides such a closure in a well-defined framework by separating resolved gas flows, represented through transport terms, from unresolved processes, parameterized as source terms in the multi-fluid equations. I will also present applications of these terms in the context of multi-phase galactic outflows and interstellar-medium modelling.
