ALMA 2040: from science to a facility design concept

ALMA2040 is an initiative to establish a large, next generation, sub-mm radio telescope, building on the success of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) by the mid of this century. A wide range of new science cases for such a facility have been defined by the astronomical community and presented to ESO's Expanding Horizons initiative. In this talk I will discuss the science requirements derived from these science cases and how they are being considered in the initial facility design concept.
