Accretion outbursts and substructure at the dead zone inner edge

Accretion outbursts in young stellar objects are believed to be caused by a sudden increase in the mass accretion rate from the protoplanetary disk onto the central star, with significant implications for both disk evolution and planet formation. We present state-of-the-art radiation hydrodynamical simulations of accretion outbursts driven near the inner edge of the dead zone, incorporating, for the first time, a self-consistent treatment of dust growth and dynamic/radiative coupling between gas and dust. Our models showcase the significance of dust evolution in regulating the thermal structure of the disk, and the role of emerging vortices in determining the overall dynamics and planetesimal formation efficiency.
