Isolating the Intrinsic Emission of an Accretion Disk

Accretion disks around supermassive black holes show significant discrepancies between theoretical models and observations. This talk presents a method to isolate the intrinsic emission of an accretion disk by analyzing its variability. We apply this approach to the radio-quiet AGN Mrk279 using Hubble Space Telescope data. We demonstrate that the accretion disk aligns with the standard theory but exhibits a much smaller radius than expected, potentially due to shielding effects. This technique can be broadly applied to upcoming large time-domain surveys, such as those conducted by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.
