Overcoming the limitations of binned response matrices for Compton telescopes

The Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) is set to achieve an unprecedented line sensitivity and angular resolution among Compton telescopes in the 0.2-5 MeV energy band. This requires a precise characterization of the instrument response and background, which is challenging to achieve with a traditional multi-dimensional binned approach. In this talk we present a novel neural network approximation scheme of the instrument response function, along with an analogous time-conditioned background model. Renormalization accounts for data selection in the measured energy, enabling accurate and more sensitive unbinned line analyses. Building on this, we discuss improvements to the spectral fitting results and outline future applications of the unbinned framework.
