Quantum-Accelerated HPC: Opportunities for Astrophysics and Astronomy

Quantum Computing (QC) is a paradigm with disruptive potential across many areas of computational science and is expected to have a significant impact on research, industry, and society. In this talk, I will provide a general overview of the fundamental concepts of QC and discuss how quantum systems can be integrated into the high-performance computing (HPC) ecosystem as a tool for astronomy and astrophysics applications. Although the exploration of quantum computing in these disciplines is still at an early stage, several promising research directions are emerging and will be highlighted. I will conclude with an overview of the experience gained from operating the first quantum systems at LRZ, a programme that began in 2024. Particular attention will be given to the early operation of Euro-Q-Exa, a 54-qubit superconducting quantum computer currently available to European researchers through a proposal-based access model. As quantum hardware continues to improve in performance, scalability, and reliability, and becomes increasingly integrated with modern AI-enabled supercomputing infrastructures, emerging synergies between HPC and quantum computing are strengthening confidence in the long-term scientific potential and practical applicability of this technology.
