A New Version Of VODataService: Blind Discovery and Theory Data

VODataService is the most important metadata schema (called „Registry Extension“ in this ecosystem) in the Virtual Observatory, defining metadata specific to colletions of astronomical data. Concepts covered include tablesets, physcial coverage, access interfaces, and some minimal provenance. In its upcoming version 1.3, three important extra pieces of metadata will be introduced into VODataService: columns statistics, the source of the data (theory vs. observation), and the type of data served (e.g., images vs. time series). In this talk, I will discuss how it came that we address these fairly fundamental points only now and then present the current proposed solutions with a view to giving the wider community an opportunity to weigh in on the details.
