Performance and First Science Insights from the 4MOST AGN Survey (S6): Early Results from SPV

The 4MOST AGN Survey (S6) aims to target approximately 1.5 million AGN across 10,000 deg², including X-ray selected sources, dust-obscured infrared AGN, high-redshift quasars, and optically-selected quasars identified via Gaia astrometry. In this talk, we present initial results from the S6 Survey Programme Validation (SPV). Through a comprehensive visual inspection campaign, we validate the spectroscopic redshifts produced by the 4MOST Level 2 extragalactic pipeline and characterize survey performance across redshift and r-band magnitude. Our analysis indicates that the pipeline performs robustly, even for challenging single-exposure quasar spectra, with only a small fraction of sources requiring manual redshift correction. Furthermore, we highlight the diversity of optical spectra captured by the X-ray and IR subsurveys, including optically bright quasars, heavily obscured AGNs, and powerful AGN-driven outflows with unprecedented kinematic profiles resolved by 4MOST’s spectral resolution. These early findings demonstrate the potential of the full S6 programme to investigate AGN physics across a broad range of redshifts, luminosities, and obscuration levels.
