Magnetic disks around prompt-collapse black holes from binary neutron star mergers

Binary neutron star (BNS) mergers that undergo prompt collapse to a black hole are expected to exhibit qualitatively different magnetic field evolution from long-lived remnants. This regime, however, remains largely unexplored due to the computational challenges of performing high-resolution GRMHD simulations. Using the gradient SGS model, I present a suite of 6 BNS merger simulations leading to prompt collapse and investigate the amplification and evolution of magnetic fields during the first 10 milliseconds after black hole formation. The results show that prompt-collapse mergers produce thin accretion disks that, in some cases, become highly magnetised.
